They all get recycled and every bit used
They are serviced, graded to size and strength and
sent to Clubs in third world countries to give sight.
Even lens that are beyond use are crushed and sold for use in the white paint on the roads, giving it the sparkle you see from your headlights!

Fact    A few years ago our District Governor visited an eye camp in a third world country where they were suppling the recycled spec's
One gentleman tried on a pair of Glasses and was able to see his family for the first time. he then took them off and handed them back saying "Thank you," he was amazed that they were for him to keep, he was also given a spare pair
.

We collect the glasses and box them up, Once a year a lorry comes over from a Lions Club in Normandy France, 'Medico,'  to collect the boxed up specs from the whole of our Lions District.  Usually, our club donates in the region of 5,000 to 7,000 pairs and these together with thousands of others are taken to their 'Factory' where everything is graded and sanitised.

Just over 21,000 pairs of glasses in a continuous chain, beating the previous record of 17,000. Sadly we didn't have the world record confirmed by Guinness as we couldn't justify the excessive costs that were involved.
